I finished reading Lois McMaster Bujold's latest Vorkosigan book, Diplomatic Immunity last night (for the second time).

Spoiler alert!!!

At the end, Miles is holding his newborn children, and thinks (paraphrased), "I was the end of human evolution, and now I am just a link in a chain."

I think that is a wonderful and profound statement about the effect of children, and it's certainly the effect my kids have had on me. More than anything I have ever done, or possibly ever will do, Chance and Paxton are now further along than I will ever be in this tapestry of human history. It makes me fell very small, but at the same time, very powerful. A butterfly flapping its wings, and all that.

The fact that I have no idea who Chance and Paxton will become is frightening and exhilarating. Ginger and I are responsible, but we can only show and teach and love. At some point, they will leave us completely, and make their own ways in the world.
