Return of the King

December 19th, 2003 by John

Premiere night. 7:00 show. 5:30 Don Pablo's: well within staggering distance, but not enough time to get a good buzz on, as Ginger wants to go stand in line. David brings fresh chocolate, straight off the line (plus shipping time). The theater sells out three screens (~200 people per screen, times $8 per ticket, times 3 screens = lots of bling for that three hours), and the line has to go outside the theater and back in and wrap around the escalator. Still, everyone is well-mannered.

The theater is so crowded that we have to sit 2 and 3. We start sitting 2, 2, and 1, until I realize that the loser airhead next to me is using the seat between us for her coat. Umm, does "sold out" not ring any bells with you, sweetheart? And what's with the people who are trying to save 40 seats together? "I know, honey! We'll rely on the kindness of strangers, not to mention people who are just as fanatic about this as we are, to keep all of us together!" Of course, the joke's on cynical ol' me, since I think they manage to do it.

This movie is awesome. Like FOTR, I really don't notice the time going by. The battle scenes, particularly the oliphaunts, just plain rock. I don't remember being in another theater with a crowd that laughs, claps, and cheers like this one. Oh, and cries, too: at the tearful parting scene, I realize that there is an awful lot of sniffing and wiping of eyes going on around me.

OK, maybe my throat gets a little tight. I'm a man, I can admit it. Can't I?

Still, Peter Jackson has got to be one of the most satisfied people on the planet right now. How can he not be, knowing that he was so successful in bringing that vision to life? Again, awesome, with the emphasis on awe.

Oh, and for a really funny (if very coarse) "review", check out this AICN piece
