Gallery is working!

January 22nd, 2004 by John

Yay! I FINALLY got Gallery working. The saga of this one goes way back to before Thanksgiving. I knew I was going to get a new camera, but trying to install Gallery was pure unadulterated hell. The main problem was trying to get it to create the thymbnails. Well, really the main problem was that the "here's what we think your system is set up like" page from the Gallery configuration was misleading, thinking that NetPBM and ImageMagick were both installed. Gallery needs only one, but regardless of how I tried to configure them, it didn't work.

I read and posted in the Dixiesys forums, to no avail. One thing I found was that ImageMagick needed to be installed via a support ticket, but no joy after I got the ticket closed. Finally, I was browsing the forums last night, and found some others who had problems too. For whatever reason, some of the Ensim servers don't seem to have one of the dependencies that ImageMagick needs. The recommendation was to install NetPBM locally.

So tonight I did just that. I found a HOWTO on the forum. It in turn recommended installing FileMan, mainly for its "shell" features. Dixiesys has a HOWTO on installing FileMan as well. Fileman's pretty cool, and with all the chmods you have to do to switch between secure and configure modes for Gallery, it's much nicer to just run "sh ./config.sh" in FileMan than it is to individually set the attributes via my FTP client.

On that note, the chmod exercise led me to ditch my FTP client of long-standing choice, WS-FTP LE for Filezilla. Why this never got on my radar is beyond me, but it is sweetness incarnate. WS-FTP was clean, Filezilla is cleaner. WS-FTP's chmod dialog not only doesn't let you enter the numeric chmod (like 755 or 666; you have to check boxes), the values it shows you ARE THE LAST VALUES YOU ENTERED. Who thought of that one, I wonder? Anyway, I have a better client and I don't have to feel guilty about not paying for shareware. I know, I'm what's wrong with this country. Bite my shiny metal ass.

Cute kid pictures coming soon!
